As of now, VISD will operate on a 2 hour late-start schedule on Tuesday, with buses running 2 hours late. We will provide confirmation of that late start, or any changes to Tuesday's schedule, on Monday afternoon. Parents/guardians, if you are not receiving our text messages, please login to your Skyward account and update your contact cell number. This afternoon, Vernon ISD Athletic Director and Lions Head Football Coach Kevin Sherrill announced he was leaving after serving in those roles for five years. Other than his first year in Vernon, the Lions have made the playoffs every season, winning two playoff games and reaching the regional quarterfinal round in both 2024 and 2025. Out of an abundance of caution, Vernon ISD is canceling school for tomorrow, 1/23/2026. All schools and offices will be closed. The Vernon Boys and Girls Club will also be closed.

Due to the winter weather that is expected to hit the area Friday afternoon, Vernon ISD will be operating on our regular Early Release Schedule tomorrow. PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO THE WEATHER, THE VERNON BOYS & GIRLS CLUB WILL NOT BE OPEN TOMORROW.

Vernon ISD is keeping a close eye on the forecast for the winter weather that is expected to hit our area on Friday.
Due to the high school basketball games being moved from Friday to Thursday, our Vernon Middle School games will be played today instead of Thursday. Our 7th & 8th grade boys will be traveling to Wichita Falls to take on City View, while our 7th & 8th grade girls will be hosting City View. Games will start at 5 p.m.
Our area is currently being hit by the flu, along with viruses and other illnesses. Please review these steps to help keep your student healthy, as well as how to slow down spreading germs if they do become ill. Help our VISD staff keep our schools as healthy as possible and your student in the classroom.

Vernon ISD will be closed Monday, Jan. 19. Good luck to all of our students participating in the Wilbarger County Junior Livestock & Project Show!! School will resume and the Administration Building will resume regular office hours on Tuesday. We hope all of our students and staff enjoy their 3-day weekend!
January is School Board Recognition Month and our Vernon ISD trustees found gifts from the district and each campus waiting for them at their regular monthly business meeting held Monday evening. Vernon ISD would like to thank our trustees for caring about our district, and for wanting nothing but the best for our students, teachers and all of our staff. VISD trustees include Carrie Hawkins, Patrick Parmer, Chris Lehman, Emory Byars, Jarrod David, Bryson Henry, and Amanda Lehman, who left the meeting before the photo was taken to attend a school activity her daughter was participating in.
VISD is currently taking nominations for the Gifted & Talented Program. If parents would like more information on the GT Program, two meetings are scheduled for today: 1 p.m., at the VISD Administration Building Boardroom; and 6 p.m., in the Media Center at Vernon High School.

Due to Atmos Energy working on a project, only one lane on Wood Street will be open this afternoon. To try and alleviate traffic congestion, parents/guardians who pick their child up after school will be allowed to pick them up in the front of the Middle School and on the north side of the school.

This morning, the Vernon Police Department and Vernon ISD welcomed Autumn Thames to their staffs. Autumn will hold the rank of lieutenant with the Vernon PD and will serve as VISD's Director of School Safety and Security, as well as be the School Resource Officer at McCord Elementary. Interim Supt. Dr. Blaise Boswell explained this is a newly-established position and reflects VISD's and Vernon PD's collaborative commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
The nomination window for our Vernon ISD Gifted and Talented Program is now open. The deadline to nominate a student is Monday, Jan. 19. Parents, teachers and others in the community can nominate students. On Thursday, students in Mrs. Julie Terry's 8th grade Honors class created food trucks connected to the novel they are reading, "The Giver." The book is a dystopian novel where everyone is the same and no one can see color. The students chose different characters to staff their food trucks and created menus that only connected back to the book. Some chose their menu by color, others by important symbols from the novel and others from giving the food names that tie to the novel. They created uniforms based on the novel, playlists, and eating utensils. Mrs. Terry said all of the students did very well.
