Tuesday a new era begins for Vernon ISD, as it will be the first official day of school at the new Vernon Elementary School, which brings second through fifth graders together on one campus. While a new era begins, the old Central and Shive Elementary era ends, and with it all the procedures concerning dropping off and picking up students.

The drop off and pick up flow at the new elementary school, should be must smoother with both happening in parking lots instead of in the street, and with their being separate parking lots for buses and cars.

The East parking lot, the one in front of the school on Stadium Drive, will be used for students being dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon. Vehicles must use the North entrance of the parking lot, and follow the lane to the front of the building. Students will be dropped off in front of the building and enter through the main entrance. Vehicles will continue around and exit the parking lot at the South exit.

Buses will use the parking lot South of the school on Yamparika Street. Students will be let off the buses in the bus lane and will enter through the South door of the school, which is in the cafeteria.

When school is dismissed, those students who ride the bus home or to the Boys and Girls Club will use the South door to exit the building and get on their bus.

Parents and others who are picking up students must use the North entrance of the front parking lot. They will follow the lane into the loop and students will be dismissed from the North door.  Students will be escorted to their cars by school staff members. After picking up the student, the vehicle will turn right, go in front of the school, and exit the parking lot at the South exit.

“Please be patient with us while we make the adjustment to our new home,” VES Principal Leslie Powell asked parents and others. “We are looking forward to all of us being under one roof and on one campus, but once we’re together, we may see that we have to tweak a few things to get everything running as smoothly as possible.”
