Last week was “camp week” for our Vernon High School cheerleaders and they totally ROCKED IT!!
The 2025-26 VHS cheerleading squad brought home numerous awards from the Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp held at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine last Thursday through Saturday.
As a group, the cheerleaders won numerous awards, including two Blue Superior Ribbons and was a Spirit Stick winner. Three cheerleaders – Klancy Sherrill, Zayley Horn and Breigh Halford – received All-American Cheerleader honors, and both Klancy and Zayley earned a UCS staff invitation for next year. The Pin It Forward Award went to Claire Mayo.
As “Leo the Lion” mascot Julian Rodriguez won several awards throughout the camp. He won the daily Spirit Stick Award EVERYDAY; the Most Spirited Award; All Things Props, Spirit and Crowd Engagement Award.
“This incredible group accomplished great things and gained valuable skills along the way,” said first-year VHS Cheerleader Coach Kia Dixon. “I’m excited to watch their continued growth throughout the season! Their passion for cheerleading and dedication to success were evident in everything they did. Even when challenges arose, they stayed positive, pushed through, and made it happen. I’m so proud of their teamwork, resilience and spirit – this is going to be a great season!”
The cheerleaders earned a Spirit Stick Award for the entire week. The award went to the squads that showed the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm, while taking into account attitude during classes, promptness, cooperation, relationships with other squads, leadership, etc.
The VHS cheerleaders earned a Blue Superior Ribbon in Sideline Cheer Evaluation and Camp Dance Routine Evaluation, which deemed them ready for the competition mat.
They placed second in Cheer Competition and in Game Day Competition, and was third in the Camp Dance Competition.
“It was a great weekend at camp for our Vernon High School cheerleaders,” Dixon said.
Members of the VHS cheerleader squad this year are: seniors, Aaliyah Moralez, Klancy Sherrill, Jeana Martinez, Kyndell Horn, Olivia Carr, Brooklyn Harjo, Breigh Halford, and Zayley Horn; juniors, Leah Delagarza, Kaydence Smith, Claire Mayo, Alyssa Adams, and Brek Payne; sophomores, Amari Garcia, Arianna Granados, and mascot Julian Rodriguez; freshmen Serenity Edwards, Charleigh Cooper, Caylee Streit, and Trista Lehman.
