Teams in District 7-3A had beautiful weather Monday for Day 1 of their UIL Track & Field Meet that was conducted at the Holliday football field. Day 1 featured the field events, with Vernon High School claiming nine tickets to the District 7A & 8A Area Track & Field Meet that will be held next week in Jacksboro.
The top four finishers in each event advance to the area meet, and those nine spots were claimed by four Lions and two Lady Lions.
Jamari Chance’s jump of 42-feet, 4-inches gave him the district title in the Boys Triple Jump, while Breasha Waggoner picked up a district title in the Girls High Jump when she cleared 5-2. Chance also had a second-place finish in the Boys Long Jump with a leap of 21-1½.
Also collecting silver medals were Tevan Evans who cleared 6-4 in the Boys High Jump, and Nadia Gaines in the Girls Shot Put with a throw of 34-¾
Klancy Sherril took the bronze in the Girls High Jump after clearing 4-10, and Caylor Streit also earned a bronze medal in the Boys Long Jump with jump of 21-¾.
Streit will also be competing in the Boys High Jump at the area meet, as he cleared 5-10 to take fourth in the district meet. Keigan Ballard also had a fourth-place finish in the Boys Shot Put with a throw of 46-7½ to move on the area meet.
Ballard just missed going to area in two events, as he finished fifth in the Boys Discus with a toss of 134-11. Also finishing fifth in his event as Kylan Jagiere in the Boys Long Jump with a distance of 10-10¾.
Vernon also picked points with sixth-place finishes in three events. For the Lions, Xaven Leija was sixth in the Boys Triple Jump with a jump of 38-8 and for the Lady Lions, Waggoner was sixth in the Girls Long Jump with a leap of 14-5 and Erianna Chavez had a throw of 87-8 in the Girls Discus to finish sixth.
The running preliminary races were held Monday afternoon and the district meet will wrap up Thursday evening with the running finals set to begin at 5 p.m.
