boys sprint relay medal stand

   It was a good evening on track for our Vernon Lions and Lady Lions Thursday at the District 7-3A District Track & Field Meet in Holliday, as they collected three individual event and two relay district championship. Vernon also claimed 16 qualifying spots for the area track meet next week. The top four finishes in each event advance to the District 7-3A & District 8-3A Area Track & Field Meet.

   In the Boys Division, the Lions finished second in the overall team standings, and will be sending all three relay teams and individuals in five events to the area meet.

   Tru Gipson is the district 100-meter Dash champion as he won with a personal best time of 10.87 seconds. Gipson also anchored the Sprint Relay and 800-meter Relay teams to district titles. Tyce Payne, Jamari Chance, Ethan Robledo and Gipson turned in a time of 42.19 seconds. Robledo, Chance, Kylan Jagiere and Gipson won the 800-meter Relay with a time of 1-minute, 28.36-seconds.

   The Lions also claimed the district crown in the 300-meter Hurdles, as Caylor Streit pulled away after the last hurdle to capture first place with a time of 39.37 seconds, which was a personal best.

   Chance took the silver medal in the 200-meter Dash with a personal-best time of 21.89 seconds. Streit earned a bronze medal in the 100-meter Hurdles with a time of 15.67 seconds.

   The Lions also earned a silver medal in the Mile Relay with a time of 3:31.21. Running the mile relay were Ty Scott, Streit, Donivan Montano, and Jagiere.

   Both Robledo and Jagiere will be going to area in individual events, as Robledo finished fourth in the 400-meter Dash with a time of 50.95, and Jagiere was fourth in the 200-meter Dash with a time of 22.29, which was a personal best.

   The Lady Lions picked up one district title and that came in the 100-meter Hurdles, as Brek Payne ran a personal-best 17.85 seconds to grab the gold medal. In the 300-meter Hurdles Klancy Sherrill took the silver medal with a time of 48.41 seconds, and Payne was fourth with a time of 51.23 seconds.

   Breasha Waggoner also grabbed a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.93 seconds.

   All three Lady Lion relays finished fourth and earned a trip to the area meet. The Sprint Relay team of Sherrill, Charleigh Cooper, Nyairah Massenburg and Waggoner had a time of 51.24 seconds, while the 800-meter Relay team of Payne, Cooper, Massenburg and Sherrill had a time of 1:51.01. In the Mile Relay the squad of Faith Robertson, Caylee Streit, Kyndell Horn and Nyneave Yarbarough had a time of 4:43.20.
