Fourteen Vernon Lions and Lady Lions will be competing in 14 events at the Class 3A Region 1 Track & Field Meet after qualifying to advance at the 7-3A & 8-3A Area meet held yesterday in Jacksboro. The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional meet, which will be held May 1 & 2 in Abilene.
Two Lions claimed area titles, with Jamari Chance winning the Boys Triple Jump with a leap of 43-feet, 8.75-inches, and Tevan Evans grabbing gold in the Boys High Jump by clearing 6-5. The Lady Lions also captured two event championships with Breasha Waggoner clearing 5-4 to win the Girls High Jump, and Klancy Sherrill taking gold in the Girls 300-meter Hurdles with a time of 47.25 seconds.
Silver medalists for the Lions included Tru Gipson in the Boys 100-meter Dash with a time of 10.78 seconds; and the Boys 800-meter Relay team with a time of 1-minute, 28.68 seconds. Making up the relay team were Jamari Chance, Kylan Jagiere, Ethan Robledo and Tru Gipson.
Keigan Ballard picked up a bronze medal in the Boys Shot Put with a throw of 46-10. Other third-place finishers for the Lions were: Jamari Chance in the Boys Long Jump with a jump of 22-1.25; Caylor Streit in the Boys 300-meter Hurdles with a time of 40.04 seconds; and Kylan Jagiere in the Boys 200-meter Dash with a time of 23.01 seconds. The Lions had a time of 42.99 seconds in the 400-meter Relay, good enough for a bronze medal. Running on the relay were Tru Gipson, Jamari Chance, Ethan Robledo and Tyce Payne.
The mile relay team of Kylan Jagiere, Donivan Montano, Ty Scott and Caylor Streit finished fourth with a time of 3:29.96, and also finishing fourth was Caylor Streit in the Boys High Jump after clearing 6-0.
The lone silver medal for the Lady Lions came in the Girls 100-meter Hurdles, where Brek Payne turned in a time of 17.42 seconds.
Klancy Sherrill claimed the bronze in the Girls High Jump after clearing 4-10, while Nadia Gaines was fourth in the Girls Shot Put with a throw of 34-0.5.
Vernon also picked up points in a few other events.
The Lady Lions finished sixth in both the 400-meter Relay and the 800-meter Relay. The quartet of Charleigh Cooper, Nyairah Massenburg, Klancy Sherryll and Breasha Waggoner had a time of 50.94 in the 400-meter Relay, while Waggoner Massenburg, Cooper, and Brek Payne had a time of 1:50.43 in the 800-meter Relay.
For the Lions, Caylor Streit was fifth in the 110-meter Hurdles with a time of 15.42, and Ethan Robledo was sixth in the 400-meter Dash with a time of 51.90.
