Fifteen teams battled the hot temperatures Saturday at the 4th Annual Lions Roar Golf Tournament benefitting Vernon Independent School District teachers and students. The tournament was played at the Hillcrest Country Club, and while the temperatures were blazing, so were the scores!
The Oklaunion Power Station team claimed first place with a score of 57, a blistering 14-under par. Members of the winning team were Aaron Weaver, Clay Conley, Dillon Bivins and Mayson Leija. Three strokes back in second place was the Nextera Energy team of Nathan Mayo, Claire Mayo, Brady Jump and Heath Cardwell.
Only three strokes separated the next seven teams, as there was a battle in the middle of the pack. A scorecard playoff was used to determine third and fourth place, with two teams shooting a 10-under par 61. The scorecard playoff started on hole No. 4 and the two teams matched each other score for score until hole No. 7, where one team recorded an eagle and the other team had a birdie. Claiming third place was the team of Ky Wrinkle, Darrell Colbert, Bambi Nava and Kathy McClellan, while the Cumming Gallagher Group of Bryson Henry, Jarrod David, Bowie Franks and Logan Rinehart finished fourth.
Winning the Men’s Closest to the Pin prize was Barlee Barron, who was 7-feet, 1-inch away from the pin on hole No. 4, and the Ladies Longest Drive prize went to Bambi Nava.
The tournament raised approximately $21,000, with those funds being used for things like scholarships and student incentive awards.
