Our VMS football teams hosted their counterparts from Boyd last night at Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium, and both the 7th grade and 8th grade team picked up victories.
The 7th grade team claimed a 36-0 victory to remain undefeated with a record of 7-0. Brazos Eakin scored three rushing touchdowns of 57 yards, 24 yards and 1 yard, while Ryker Wilson added a 24-yard TD on the ground. Wilson also helped lead the defense with a fumble recovery, while Nehemiah Lin returned another fumble 42 yards for touchdown.
The 8th grade team picked up a 32-16 victory to improve their record to 3-4 for the year. Jakaiden White scored on a 14-yard run and also hit Isaiah Boyd with a 5-yard touchdown pass, and he returned an interception 92 yards for a defensive score. Arion McCoy also had a 39-yard touchdown run.

Yesterday, students in Ms. Duncan's pre-kindergarten class all helped make a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern, and got to stick their hand inside the pumpkin.
We wrapped up National Red Ribbon Week yesterday with the theme "Say BOO to Drugs!", and it was costume day! We had plenty of superheroes, princesses, video game characters and more roaming our halls.
Vernon is hosting another volleyball playoff game tonight. It is a TAPPS Regional Playoff Game between Accelerated Christian and Greenville Christian. The game will begin at 6 p.m., at D.O. Fulton Gym. Tickets must be purchased online at https://www.vernonisd.org/page/ticket-purchases

Our Lions will hit the road this afternoon to travel to Boyd for tonight's district showdown with the Yellowjackets. A Vernon victory will secure at least third place and the No. 3 seed going into the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the forecast calls for only a slight chance of rain during the game. Today Angela Morrison, a VISD retired teacher, came to McCord Elementary to read Halloween stories to kindergarten and first grade students. She encouraged the students to go to Munchkins on Main tonight and stop by where the local retired teachers association will be set up handing out free books.
In celebration of Halloween and the end of the second six weeks of the school year, our VES PTO treated our VES teachers and staff to a caramel apple bar this morning. The cart was sponsored by a donation Scott and Barb Weiszhaar made to the VES PTO.
Our VES second graders have been studying the War of 1812 and brought history to life this week. Students used yardsticks to measure the 30-by-42 foot flag that Mary Pickersgill made to fly over Fort McHenry. The students counted by threes as they measured (using the yardstick), and then decorated their own giant flag. All of the second graders fit inside the flag to decorate it! What a fun, hands-on way to connect the RLA (Reading & Language Arts) unit with history and math!!
A HUGE thank you to Hillcrest Pharmacy for providing the delicious yogurt parfaits for our Teacher Appreciation Cart. The VMS & VHS PTO organized the cart and took it by each campus this morning in celebration of completing the second six weeks of the school year! ❤️

Wednesday's theme for National Red Ribbon Week was "Team Up Against Drugs" with students and staff having the option to dress like a twin with a friend, or wear their favorite team gear. We definitely had some students showing their team spirit for their favorite team, and we also had a few who took "twinning" to a triplet or quadruplet look.

Last week the TEA STEM Lab visited Vernon Elementary and all students were able to spend time in the STEM Lab. Each grade was presented a story with a problem to solve. The students in the class were divided into groups and then had to work together to solve the problem. Third graders heard a story of a town who's packages had to get over a gorge to be delivered. Their job was to build a catapult that would be able to send the packages (small marshmallows) over the gorge.
On Tuesday, our VHS life skills calls took a field trip to Wichita Falls. They ate lunch at Chick-fil-A and visited the pumpkin patch at Smith's Gardentown. At the pumpkin patch the students fed the ducks, painted pumpkins, walked through a maze, and played in a bounce house. Even the teachers had a little fun in the bounce house.

We're celebrating National Red Ribbon Week and the theme is "Make a Difference. Be A Hero. Stay Drug Free." Tuesday was Hat Day and the theme was "Put a Cap on Bad Choices." Our kiddos showed up in all kinds of caps and hats.
Last week VHS senior Claire Mayo competed in a fall golf tournament, the Abilene High Tournament played at the Shady Oaks Golf Course and claimed the girls championship. Claire shot an 81 to finish first in the Girls Division.
D.O. Fulton Gym will be the site of a Class 4A, Div. 1 Bi-District Volleyball Match Thursday, as the Graham Lady Blues will take on the Plainview Lady Bulldogs. Plainview goes into the Division 1 playoffs as the No. 1 seed from District 5-4A, while Graham goes in as the No. 2 seed from District 6-4A.
