Friday night during a ceremony at halftime of the Lions' football game our 2026 UIL Film Sweepstakes State Champions received their state rings. Members of the state champion film team included: Garrett Munson, 3 time state finalist and 2 time silver medalist, including 2026, in the Traditional Animation Category; and the gold medalist Narrative Category film crew -- Kenneth Cordero, camera and sound technician; Jacob Brown, camera technician and actor; Malakhi Propes-Scott (represented by his mother, Tara Ramirez), cinematographer, editor and actor; and Donivan Montano, screenwriter, director and actor. Our film production coach is Dustin Swatzell. A big congratulations to all as they claimed the first event state championship and first film sweepstakes state title in VHS history.

This is National Red Ribbon Week and Monday's theme was "Red-y to make good choices!" We were seeing red everywhere at McCord, as our students were decked out in their favorite shade of red.
Seniors and their parents listen to Jeannie Ballard, from Vernon College, as she explains the importance of applying for the FAFSA during a meeting last night in the VHS Cafeteria. A second meeting will be held this evening. All seniors and their parents, even those who attended last night, are encouraged to be at today's meeting, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., and will also be held in the VHS Cafeteria.

The VES Blood Drive will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. , as the Our Blood Institute Bloodmobile will be in our parking lot. Our Blood Institute supplies blood to all of our area hospitals including Wilbarger General. Your blood donation could be the one that saves the life of your neighbor, your friend, and even a family member!! Please take a moment to give the gift that costs you nothing, but could save a life!!
Our juniors and seniors were able to visit with representatives from several colleges and universities this morning at our annual College Day Fair. The students were able to pick up information about the different colleges and ask questions as they stopped by each table. One of the college tables was manned by VHS alum, Sarah Castleberry (Class of 2020). Sarah is currently working as a recruiter for Dallas Baptist University while she goes through DBU's doctoral program.

A parent meeting for those who have daughters planning to play middle school and/or high school Lady Lions basketball this year has been scheduled for 6 p.m., Wednesday, at D.O. Fulton Gym. Lady Lions Head Coach Carlynn Murguia and her staff will be on hand to go over important program information and answer any questions you may have.
The Lions picked up their first district win of the season last Friday with a 35-14 victory over Bowie. The Vernon defense forced 7 turnovers, including 6 interceptions. The Defensive MVP for the Lions was Kayson Sanders, who had 2 interceptions, defended 6 passes and had 2 pass break ups. The offense started slow, but a long pass reception by M'Aujehl Aboso provided a spark and it started rolling. Aboso was the Offensive MVP for Vernon, finishing the game with 58 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns, along with 84 yards receiving and another score. The Lions are now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in district play.
After picking up their first District 4-3A, D1 victory of the season at home last Friday against Bowie, the Lions hit the road looking for district win number 2 and to solidify their spot in the playoffs this week. Vernon travels to Boyd to square off against the Yellowjackets who will be battling to stay alive for the playoffs. There's was plenty of pink everywhere at McCord last Friday, as our students and staff "pinked out" for both the Lions pep rally theme and for Breast Cancer Awareness.
Our McCord students enjoyed a visit from the Vernon Fire Department last Friday. Firemen showed the students their safety equipment, the equipment on the fire truck and also talked about fire safety, and what to do in case there is a fire.

Seniors remember tonight is the first of two meetings to help you and your parents understand what FAFSA is and to provide help in completing the form. Tonight's meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., in the VHS Cafeteria. Representatives from Vernon College will be on hand to share valuable information. Tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m., representatives from Vernon College and Panhandle Plains will assist parents and students on completing the FAFSA. It is highly encouraged for senior parents and students to attend both meetings. Parents/students should bring their personal devices, any paperwork needed, and the FSA IDs.
