VHS students who competed in the UIL Film competition were recognized by the VISD school board at the trustees' meeting Monday evening. VHS had 6 entries in the competition, with 4 advancing to the semi-final round and 1 qualifying for the state finals.
The Traditional Animation entry "Vietnam" is the film that advanced to the state finals. Putting that film together were Garrett Munson, Rodrigo Olivas, Kenneth Cordero and Eziqiel Amador. Two other Traditional Animation entries "False Conscious" by Taw Doh Htoo and "Flames" by Aung Men made the semifinals, as did the Digital Animation entry "I Remember" by Taw Doh Htoo. Two Narrative entries, "Climb to the Top" and "The Stakeout", both by Malakhi Propes-Scott and Donivan Montano, advanced to the second round of competition, but did not make it to the semifinals.
Wednesday night's parents meeting for students who signed up to tryout for the 2025-26 VHS cheerleading squad has been cancelled due to the weather. The only parents meeting will now be held Wednesday, Feb. 26. Students who are trying out MUST have a parent attend that meeting. The meeting will start at 6 p.m., in the VHS cafeteria.
Due to the slick road conditions and with the extreme cold temperatures not expected to allow the road conditions to improve, Vernon ISD officials have announced school will be closed Wednesday. We hope everyone stays safe and warm tomorrow.
Vernon is home to the late legendary wrestler Skandar Akbar and later this Spring Vernon High School will be hosting a professional wrestling event. The Skandar Akbar Memorial Cup will be held Saturday, March 29, at D.O. Fulton Gym. The event, a six-man tag team tournament, is being presented by King of Sports Championship Wrestling. Due to the swiftly deteriorating road conditions, Vernon ISD Administrators have made the decision to dismiss school early. Buses will begin running at 1:30 p.m. at McCord. 1:35 p.m., Vernon Elementary; 1:40 p.m. Vernon Middle School; 1:45 p.m. Vernon High School. Those parents who would like to pick up their child before 1:30 p.m. may do so. Vernon Elementary students who usually go to Boys & Girls Club will stay at VES due to club not having enough staff.

Thirty of our Vernon Lady Lions powerliftings have qualified for the Regional Powerlifting Meet. Ten have qualified in the Unequipped Division, while 20 have qualified in the Equipped Division. The Unequipped Regionals take place Feb. 26-27 in Big Spring, while the Equipped Regionals will be held Feb. 28-March 1 in Eldorado. Today's baseball scrimmage against Walters has been cancelled due to the weather.
While the students were out of school yesterday, our teachers and staff were in school -- at least for half a day. Monday was a Professional Development Day for our teachers and staff, but it wasn't all work and no play. There were PD sessions for half a day, and for the other half of the day teachers and staff had the option of going to a movie at the Vernon Plaza or getting a little artistic at Paint Your Peace. Regardless of what option they chose, all had a good time.
Mijah Johnson and Ivan Barrera were crowned VHS Valentine's Queen and King during the Valentine's Dance held Friday evening. Crown Bearer was Zaiden Gardener, while Flower Girl was Penelope Johnson. Other members of the Queen's court were Kaitlyn Beam, Emily Garcia, Aubrey Castorena, Marhianna Johnson, Zayleigh Sweet, Key'Maria McBride, and Kellan Byars (not pictured). Other members of the King's court were Ethan Evans, Jackson Aydelott, Parker Flynn, J'Dynn Cooper, Linden Farrell, Josiah Geigger, and Landon Bynum (not pictured).

The VHS Lionette Drill Team is already making plans for next year. If you are interested in joining the drill team for the 2025-26 school year make plans to attend the signup and parent meeting on March 3.
All McCord classes held Valentine's Day parties last Friday to celebrate the day of love.
Last Saturday was Old Timers Day at Jabe Brazzle Field as the 2025 Lions held the VHS Baseball Alumni Game. Players and fans both battled windy and cold conditions, but had a lot of fun at the ballpark. The Alumni team got the best of the current Lions, 14-6. A huge thank you and shoutout to the former Lions who came out to play. Smith (Class of 1994).
Saturday is School Resource Officer Day and Vernon High School is blessed to have one of the best in Officer Cody Cook. Today, Officer Cook was presented with a card in appreciation for all that he does to help ensure the safety of our students, teachers and staff. A VHS graduate who has been with the Vernon PD for over 15 years, Officer Cook has served as our SRO for two years.

Save The Date!! Our VES Kids Heart Challenge kicks off on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and ends on Friday, March 7. During this time our students will discover ways to take care of their hearts and brains through fun activities while practicing kindness and gratitude. They will also learn ways to de-stress. Plus, the students have the chance to earn PE equipment for our school while raising funds to protect all hearts. VHS senior Izzy Espinoza left this morning for the Class 5A State Wrestling Tournament being held Friday and Saturday in Houston.
