Last night was Senior Night for our basketball, wrestling and powerlifting athletes. Seniors and their parents were recognized during festivities prior to the Lady Lions' basketball game at D.O. Fulton Gym.
Earning our VES Student of the Week honors for the Week of Feb. 2-6 were: 2nd Grade -- Benjamin Brocklehurst; 3rd Grade -- Mason Smith (not pictured); 4th Grade -- Ethan Fox-Guerrero; and 5th Grade -- Eutropia Sanchez. Congratulations!! We're proud of you!!
Eight Lions made the Times Record News 2025 Red River 22 Large-School Team and two earned special honors. Ty Scott was named the Most Valuable Player, while Adrain Felton was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Also making the Red River 22 team were offensive linemen Manny Ochoa and Keigan Ballard; linebackers Bowie Eakin and Tyce Payne; defensive back Jamari Chance; and kicker Mu Soe.
Ty is only the fourth Lion to be named the Red River 22 MVP and the first since 2006. The others are Mark Tidwell (1977), Benny Cherry (1992), and Aston Whiteside (2006). Ty finished 2025 with over 1,000 yards passing and rushing, and also contributed on defense in the secondary. From his defensive end position, Adrain racked up 13 1/2 sacks and 32 tackles for loss. He is the first Lion to receive the Red River 22 DPOY since 1997 when defensive lineman Sidney Gaines earned the honor.

We will be honoring the two senior members of our Vernon Lions basketball team tonight. Senior Night festivities will begin at 5:45 p.m., at D.O. Fulton Gym, with senior basketball players, as well as seniors involved in wrestling and powerlifting, and their parents being recognized. Our Lions will square off against the Iowa Park Hawks in a District 7-3A battle following the Lady Lions' game. The boys' varsity game should tip off at approximately 7:15 p.m. Good luck Lions!! For the THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR, VHS's entry in the Traditional Animation Category of the Class 1A-3A UIL Film Competition has advanced to the State Film Festival that will be held in Austin later this month. The entry "A Tail of Two Lives" was produced by student Garrett Munson, who is making his third trip to the State Film Festival. The entry advanced from the semifinal round of competition and is one of the top 6 entries submitted in the Traditional Animation Category. For the FIRST TIME EVER Vernon High School's entry in the Narrative Category of the Class 1A-3A UIL Film Competition has advanced to the State Film Festival that will be held in Austin later this month. Several weeks ago the UIL Film Competition began and Vernon High School submitted three films in the Class 1A-3A Division. In the Documentary Category, Vernon's entry was "Garrett's Pumpkins" produced by Garrett Munson, Kenneth Cordero, Rodrigo Olivas, Logan Luster, Logan Wehrwein, and Nicholas Baird. Their entry advanced to the semifinals, but was not selected to advance to the State Film Festival.

Students in Mrs. Butler’s Principles of Arts, A/V Technology, and Communications classes spent the past two weeks creating a news cast from the ground up. They came up with their own stories, created scripts, filmed, and edited the entire project. This idea stemmed from Mrs. Butler’s time spent at KFDX this summer during her externship.
This year, VHS is offering seniors an opportunity to purchase and decorate a ceiling tile for the college they will be attending next fall. Kamryn Hall was the first senior to purchase and complete decorating a ceiling tile, and it was put up last week. Seniors wishing to decorate a ceiling tile to show what college they will be attending can contact counselor Sandra Kieschnick.

Due to the City of Vernon being under a Water Boil Order, we are cancelling school Monday. We will be purchasing pallets of water tomorrow and setting up alternate hand-washing stations at all campuses. We will have school on our regular schedule on Tuesday.

The signup period for students wishing to tryout for the VHS 2026-27 cheerleading squad opens tomorrow. The deadline to sign up is Saturday, Feb. 14. Parent meetings will be held at 6 p.m., on both Feb. 18 and Feb. 25, in the VHS cafeteria. A parent of anyone trying out for cheerleader MUST attend one of the meetings. Last Thursday, students in Mrs. Hastings Culinary classes turned into cookie detectives. Students prepared a standard chocolate chip cookie recipe, but each recipe had a missing or extra ingredient. After all cookies were prepared, the students went around and investigated each batch of cookies. Their job was to find the error in each recipe. Exercises like this help our students grasp a deeper understanding of baking and how the ingredients work together to make a baked good.
Vernon Lion Bowie Eakin finished 5th in the 165-pound weight class in the Class 5A Region 1 Wrestling Tournament held in Lubbock this weekend. Bowie is an alternate to the Class 5A State Wrestling Tournament in his weight class. The State Wrestling Tournament will be held next week. Carlito Rodriguez advanced to the regional tournament in the 175-pound class, but did not place.
