Monday VISD is celebrating the 100th day of the school year, but our 1st grade students here at McCord got a little head start this afternoon. They gathered in the cafeteria and went around to classmates asking them to sign their autograph books as they worked to get 100 autographs to commemorate the 100th day of the 2024-25 school year.

VMS hosted a Chili and Soup Cook Off today and invited local law enforcement officers to enjoy the food and vote for their favorite. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was Jan. 9, however school was out that day due to bad weather. VMS wanted to show our appreciation to our law enforcement community and thank them for keeping our students, teachers and staff, as well as our town and county safe.

At yesterday's District 3-5A Wrestling Tournament two VHS wrestlers qualified for regionals and two others earned the right to be alternates. The top 4 places in each weight class advance to regionals, with 5th place serving as an alternate. Claiming spots in the regional tournament were Izzy Espinoza, who was 2nd in the boys 120-pound class, and Kellan Byars, who was 4th in the girls' 152-pound class. Emily Rodriguez is an alternate for the girls' 132-pound class and Merrick Byars is an alternate for the boys 106-pound class. The other VHS wrestler to place in their weight class was Tyce Payne, who was 6th in the boys' 176-pound class.

Yesterday one of our VISD teachers suffered a devastating house fire. To help with expenses we will be doing a "Hat For A Cause Day" fundraiser every day next week. For $1 donation, students, teachers and staff will be allowed to wear a hat or cap in the classroom that day. The hat or cap must be school appropriate. Let's have some fun with this next week and also help a member of our VISD family.

Our Lions will square off against the Jackrabbits from Bowie tonight at D.O. Fulton Gym, and tonight is also Senior Recognition Night. Seniors in basketball, wrestling and powerlifting will be honored at approximately 5:45 p.m., following the conclusion of the JV boys game. The Lions will be looking to spoil Bowie's chances at the playoffs when they take the court at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Our Lady Lions play their final home game of the season tonight and it is Senior Recognition Night for basketball, wrestling and powerlifting. Senior Recognition activities will begin at 5:45 p.m., with the Lady Lions set to take the court against the Bowie Lady Rabbits at 6 p.m. Vernon is currently second in District 7-3A, and a victory would help secure that second-place finish, while Bowie is battling for fourth place and a spot in the playoffs.

Due to the tragic accident that occured at a Borger elementary school last week, VES is making adjustments to our arrival and dismissal procedures that will take effect on Monday.
For morning drop off there will only be one lane -- the one closest to the curb -- open. Cars will merge into one lane at the flagpole. Entrances to the parking lot will be blocked to stop students from being dropped off in the parking lot.
For afternoon pick up, again only one lane will be open. However, the parking area will be open to allow parents to park, get out of their vehicle, walk across the designated crosswalk and walk their child back through the designated crosswalk to their vehicle.
We appreciate your patience as we work through this new process and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but our top priority is the safety of our students.

On Wednesday, students in Mr. White's Economics classes took a bus trip to the historic Fargo Cemetery in the north part of Wilbarger County. Students were given an opportunity to view the tombstones, some over 100 years old, to help them gain an understanding of "The Dash." The purpose of the trip was twofold. It gave the students a chance to view the history of the cemetery and to understand that life offers more than monetary things. Mr. White told the students it is important to live your life to the fullest and put less worry on income and more on time spent.

Today was the letter 'x' day for our pre-kindergarten students. One activity to help them recognize the letter 'x' involved going on a treasure hunt because, as we all know, 'x' marks the spot of the buried treasure. They dressed up as pirates and with "arrrrgh" echoing in the hallways they searched for their 'x'. The students located 'x' and the buried treasure in the school office.
