Lion wrestlers Israel Espinoza and Merrick Byars were recognized by the district at Monday evening's VISD Board Meeting. Israel advanced to the State Wrestling Tournament where he finished eighth in his weight class. Coming out of the district tournament Merrick was an alternate for regionals in his weight class, and he found out the day before regionals that he would be competing at the tournament. He ended up just missing out on qualifying for state. The two received recognition certificates from VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward.

Prior to Spring Break, the VES Student Council started a blanket/sock drive, with items collecting going to residents at Advanced Rehabilitation and Healthcare. Today, on "International Happiness Day" members of the Student Council distributed the items at Advanced Rehab, and it was hard to tell who had more fun -- the students or the residents, who enjoyed talking with the youngsters. There was also a contest at each grade level for the class that could collect the most items. The winning classes were: 2nd Grade -- Mrs. Wendler; 3rd Grade -- Ms. White; 4th Grade -- Mrs. Inman; and 5th Grade -- Mr. Chance. All the winning classes will receive a popcorn party. Thanks to everyone who donated to our blanket/sock drive!! It was a great success because of you!

Students in Mrs. Mathes' 6th grade Reading & Language Arts class are currently reading "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and just completed the chapter where the potion teacher is introduced. This week students studied different plants and herbs that are real and are beneficial to our health. In their classes today, students selected a "potion", were given the ingredients they would need, and then followed the directions to concoct their "potion." The "potions" had names like Skele-gro (Bone Growth Potion); Veritaserum (Truth Serum); Polyjuice (Form-Changing Potion); Draught of Living Death (Semi-Killing Potion); Felix Felicis (Liquid Luck); and Amortentia (Love Potion). They were made with ingredients like goat's milk; cornish pixie blood; dragon pus; moon dust; leech juice; warm mermaid tears; and fairy dust.

Students in Mrs. Elly Gonzales' Money Matters classes were introduced to the real world this week, as Jennifer Trufan, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Wilbarger County Extension Agent for Family and Community Health, presented a three-day "It's Your Money/Welcome To The Real World" program. On the first day, students were able to explore possible careers and collect information on the availability of jobs, education needed, and average salary. On the last day, students selected their career, where they were going to work and live, and then determined if their salary would cover the cost of living. The second day of the program representatives from the Herring Bank explained the variety of bank accounts available, as well as how to write a check and how to cash a check.
