The Middle School football scrimmages and JV football game that are scheduled to be played today at Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium will continue as scheduled. The 7th & 8th grade scrimmages will be played at the same time on opposite ends of the field beginning at 4:30 p.m. The JV game will begin at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Vernon ISD has brought in cases of bottled water to ensure all players stay hydrated. Please read the flyer below for more information.

In celebration of Grandparents Day, we are having a special "Grandfriends Day" at McCord Elementary and Vernon Elementary! If you are a grandparent or a special "grandfriend" of a McCord or VES student, you are invited to eat breakfast with us at your student's campus. "Grandfriends Day" will be Wednesday, Sept. 9 for McCord, and Thursday, Sept. 10 for VES. The smiles are students get when family members visit them at school are priceless. If you have a youngster attending McCord or VES, please make plans to attend this special day.

Our Vernon ISD Administration Team has put a plan together to have school tomorrow as scheduled despite Vernon being under a Water Boil Order. Cases of water will be delivered to each campus tonight for students and staff to drink tomorrow, and sanitation stations will be set up outside the bathrooms. Our cafeteria staff will take all extra precautions necessary to safely prepare and cook food for breakfast and lunch.

Sharing an update from Wilbarger TX Emergency Management: The City of Vernon, including Oklaunion, Lockett, the Hines Community and the Box Community all remain under a boil order notice. One booster pump has been repaired and other one is close to being repaired but it will take several hours for the pressure to build. We will provide more information as it becomes available.

On Tuesday, Vernon College Access Coordinator Tracy Catlin was a guest speaker in Mr. Montez's Government classes. She spoke about the many educational and career opportunities available right here in our community. Students learned about college programs, career pathways, training opportunities, and the steps they can take now to prepare for life after high school. A big thank you to Vernon College for investing time in our students and helping them see the opportunities that are available for their future! As a small token of appreciation for taking time to invest in our students, Mr. Montez presented Ms. Catlin with a Vernon Lion buckle.

Our VES T.I.E. Club had its 3rd meeting of the year this morning and had a very special guest speaker. Mr. Kevin Hunter, founder of Shive Elementary T.I.E. Club in 2016, came from Burkburnett to speak to our young gentlemen about his starting T.I.E. Club and his overall vision for T.I.E.Club. There were 22 young 4th and 5th grade gentlemen who were able to join us for the meeting and heard Mr. Hunter speak.

We would like to pass along this message from Wilbarger Texas Emergency Management: The City of Vernon has lost the operation of it's booster pumps. When water pressure drops below 20 psi it triggers a mandatory Boil Water Notice. As of this moment we are in a Boil Water Notice. We expect to have this situation corrected by the end of the day, but the Boil order notice will remain in effect until you are notified that it has been lifted. Do not drink the water at this time.

Vernon ISD is taking the necessary precautions at our all of our campuses.

On Thursday our 7th and 8th grade football teams will be scrimmaging Wellington. The scrimmage will start at 4:30 p.m., for both teams, as they will scrimmage at the same time at Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium. They will each use half the field and move in opposite directions. The JV game against Wellington will follow at 5:45 p.m.

Prior to the first game of the season, the captains for the football team were announced, along with the players who will serve on the Lions Leadership Council. Selected as 2026 Vernon Lion Football Captains were Adrain Felton, Bowie Eakin, Brayden Booth, and Tyce Payne. Joining them on the Lions Leadership Council are Jamerion Willie, Sylus Belcher, Thomas Gonzales, Ethan Robledo, and Zander Leija.

It will be "Camo Day" on our campuses Friday, as that is this week's pep rally theme as the Lions prepare to take on the Wellington Skyrockets. The cheerleaders will be pumping up the spirit at the pep rally, which will start at 9:25 a.m.

Our Vernon Lion cheerleaders are inviting youngsters from pre-k to 6th grade to join them on the sidelines for the Sept. 18 game against the Perryton Rangers. The cheerleaders will hold a mini cheer clinic from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 17, to go over the cheers the youngsters will perform on the sideline during the game. Get your youngster signed up today!!

We will begin our weekly Ice Cream sales at VES this week. Second and third grade students will have the opportunity to purchase ice cream on Wednesdays, with fourth and fifth grade students getting that opportunity on Thursdays. Ice cream treats are $1 each.

On Monday, students in Mrs. Hanson's Anatomy & Physiology classes completed a project involving cells. Students selected a particular specialized cells and then researched the cell for a presentation. The presentation had to include diagrams of the cell, the cell functions and the location of their specialized cell. During the presentations, the students in the audience were filling out data charts based on the information they received. Mrs. Hanson said all of the students did a fantastic job.

Earning our first Kindergarten Student of the Week honors are: Beckham Shugart, Isaac Calvilli Jr., Collins McIntosh, Xailah Chapman, Delilah Varela, Rauiri Dean, and Samajae Leija. Way to go!! Congrats!!

Receiving our first Pre-Kindergarten Student of the Week honors for this school year are: Lyanna Lopez, Emery Tibbs, and Emberly Lopez. Not pictured are Maximo Reyes and Graciela Grimes. Congratulations!! We're proud of you!!

We have named Students of the Week for the first time this year. Receiving those honors for first grade were: Kalder Gilchrist, Parker Johnston, Protea Faul, Alyson Stanley, Cora Robb, and Delilah Zuniga. Great job!! Keep up the good work!!

Earning Vernon Lions Player of the Game honors for Week 1 are Bowie Eakin and Evan Wilkinson. Bowie recorded 18 total tackles, including 2 tackles for loss, from his linebacker position to earn Defensive Player of The Week honors. Evan had 1 reception for 26 yards from his receiver spot to earn the nod for Offensive Player of the Week. Congratulations Bowie and Evan!!

Vernon ISD Supt. Dr. Blaise Boswell will be providing a newsletter throughout the school year to help share district information with our students' families and other members of the community. St. Paul Lutheran Church will be hosting ESL Classes in September. The classes will be held Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., starting on Sept. 16.
